SWIMMING POOL RULES

General Pool Guidelines

--The ARA will make every effort to have a lifeguard on duty at all times during pool open hours.
--In instances when no lifeguard is available the pool will be closed and the access gates locked.
--The rest period and adult swim period, scheduled to begin at 45 minutes past the hour, will begin when the last child is out of the pool.

Pool Rules
--The lifeguards are in charge of the pool area. They are to be treated with respect at all times. They are responsible for enforcing pool rules. They have the authority to bar any member from the pool for any action they deem unsafe and for any disrespectful or abusive behavior or language. Lifeguards will report all significant offenses to the General Manager.

--All children under the age of 10 must be supervised at all times by an adult member who is within the fenced pool area. Children who are non-swimmers should stay in the shallow end of the pool, which is appropriately marked. An adult member should closely supervise children. Parents are responsible for their children's safety.

--Personal servants are not allowed on the pool deck nor can they be given responsibility for children in either pool.

--When the lifeguard is off duty, neither children nor youth under the age of 19 may be in either pool. Any person over the age of 19 who uses the pool when no lifeguards are on duty do so at their own risk and the ARA assumes no responsibility for their safety and well being.

--Appropriate swimming attire must be worn. Cut-off or jeans are not permitted. Fully clothes person must not be in the pool. Children who are not toilet trained must wear plastic pants over their diapers in both pools.

--Showers must be taken before entering the pool.

--Running, pushing, shoving, dunking, snapping towels, fighting and roughhousing in general are not permitted in the pool area at any time.

--Large floating devices and large group games are not allowed if, in the judgment of the lifeguards, the pool is crowded. Be considerate of your fellow swimmers.

--Anyone using the diving board must make certain that the area around the diving board is clear before jumping or diving from the board. Dive or jump only to the front of the board. Diving from the pool deck is allowed only on the end of the pool with the diving board.

--No eating, drinking or smoking is permitted on the pool apron. No glass is permitted on the pool apron.

--No one is deemed under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be allowed to use the pool.

--The children's pool is reserved exclusively for children five (5) years of age and under. Because no lifeguard is on exclusive duty at the children's pool, a parent or adult (excluding personal servants) must supervise any child using the pool. The supervising adult should remain in the immediate vicinity, preferable area outlined by the blue line.

--Whistle blowing system on the hour indicating the beginning of a 15-minute period in which children must vacate the pool and those who wish to swim laps may do so.

Enforcement and Sanctions
Because the pool, although popular and fun to play in, is an inherently dangerous area, the lifeguards have absolute enforcement authority on activities therein. All adult members are responsible for helping to enforce rules and for reporting to the lifeguard on duty or the General Manager any serious infractions of the rules.

Sanctions
The following sanctions apply to both pools:
First offense: Lifeguard issues a verbal warning. He has the authority to evict an offender from the pool area for the remainder of the day. The lifeguard will report all incidents of ejection to the General Manager.
Second Offense: Lifeguard reports the offense to the General Manager who reports to the Board for review and issuance of sanction consist the seriousness of the offense. These sanctions may range from a warning letter, through suspension and possible expulsion.

Court time

In order to try to accommodate demand, equity, and other considerations in allocating court usage, the following court-time designations/categories have been developed:

a) Prime Time periods on weekdays are:

Court 1 - 4:30 p.m., 5:15 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 6:45 p.m.
Court 2 - 5:15 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 6:45 p.m.

On weekends and U.S. Embassy-announced holidays,
prime time periods are 9:00 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., and 6:45 p.m.
Courts may be reserved by adult members during prime time. Students may play during prime time only when playing with an adult member who has reserved the court in his/her name.

b) Student-time periods are 3:00 p.m., 3:45 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. on Court 2 during weekdays. Students have priority to reserve Court 2 during this time, either by participating in the weekly student sign-up or on a first-come basis during the week. If no student has signed for Court 2 by 5:30 p.m. the evening prior to play, adults are eligible to sign for the vacant space. Courts are reserved for 45-minute blocks of time.

c) Social Time. The purpose of Social Time is to allow a maximum number of Club members to play tennis. Social Time is from 10:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. on weekends and American Embassy-announced holidays (provided the holiday is announced prior to the Weekly Sign-up Draw). There is no charge for court use during social time. Courts may not be used for lessons during social time.

d) During Social Time on Saturdays, students are eligible to sign up for social tennis in groups of four from 12:00 noon to 6:45 pm. Students may not sign up as part of an adult foursome, but will be given their turn on the court if a full line of four students on the sign-up board is present. If courts are empty during other periods of Social Time, students will be permitted to use the courts. Students must sign up formally. If adult members interested in using the court arrive, the students will be permitted to complete their set before leaving the court.

The following rules will govern use of the courts during Social Time:
i) Doubles only will be played unless insufficient players are available to round out foursomes. A Marker may be used to complete a foursome if there are not other members waiting/signed up.. If additional players arrive after two players have begun a set of singles, the first players may finish a "short set" before yielding the court for doubles play.

ii) Only "Short sets", the first team to win six games wins the set, will be played during social time.

iii) No more than five minutes may be used for "warm up" in preparation for playing a set during social time.

iv) A sign-up chalkboard next to Court 1 is used for determining the foursomes and their order of play. Members must sign their names on the board to make up the foursomes on a first-come basis, and may not sign up persons not in the immediate vicinity of the tennis courts. On days of social tennis, members playing reserved courts may not sign up for social tennis until their reservation period has expired (i.e., players cannot continue their match into social tennis time, unless no one is waiting).

v) Players who sign up for social tennis should be waiting and immediately available to take the court when the period begins or when the next court becomes free (i.e., persons cannot sign up and leave, returning later to play.)

vi) Players MUST join in complete foursomes on the board before starting a new line. If four players wish to play together in doubles, they must wait until a foursome is completed before entering their names on the next line.

vii) Players may not play in consecutive sets unless insufficient players are waiting to play.

viii) Upon completing a set and leaving the court, players may immediately enter their names on the next available line, and await their next turn to play. The name of a person playing on the court may not be entered on the board until that person completes playing the current set.

ix) A player who cannot play at the time his/her turn comes up may switch with a player in the next foursome waiting to play provided everybody in the next foursome agrees. If any player in the second foursome disagrees with the switch, the player requesting the change must drop to the next available line or start a new line-up at the bottom.

e) Open Time for cardholders of other clubs to use Club courts is on Tuesday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon on Court 1 only. Card holding members of other clubs are eligible and will have priority to play during this time, with or without Club members. If no other players are present during Open Time, members may begin a private lesson or practice or play singles on Court 1, but should yield the court when members of others interested in using the court arrive. There is no court charge on Court 1 during Open Time. (Open time does not apply on Embassy-announced holidays, when Social Time will take precedence).

f) Non-Prime Time is any time not included in Prime Time, Student, Social, or Open Time.

g) Other "Times" include Ladder Time, Tournament Time, and League Time. Depending upon demand, the Tennis Committee may designate certain periods as reserved for these uses.

The Tennis Committee reserves the right to adjust, modify, alter, amend, or abolish the different "times" as court utilization patterns suggest. Members will be notified at weekly sign-ups of contemplated changes.

Cancellations
1. Reserved courts which cannot be used should be cancelled as soon as possible. Members must cancel a reservation before 5:30 p.m. the day before the reservation or a "no-show" penalty will be imposed, in addition to the Marker fee if court has been reserved "with Marker".
